Cleavage: How much is too much?
Cleavage. Yes today we’re talking about your lovely lady lumps (on top).
Globally, the likes of JLO, Iggy Azalea and Kim Kardashian promoted “big butts” in 2014. Apparently, this year is all about cleavage and I’ve certainly observed this trend both on and off the runway including at the recent VAMFF fashion week and red carpets across Hollywood.
The good thing is, no breasts are exempt from this trend. Today, cleavage is welcomed at any size or shape.
Now, I really don’t mind if this topic is a little controversial – I say bring on the conversation!
So today is an opinionated piece that you are welcome to take as you please as I am of the view of each to their own. So let’s get started.
Personally, I am not one to wear a low revealing neckline for a few reasons:
- My décolletage is damaged from years of sun exposure;
- I don’t feel comfortable with a low cleavage. This is partly due to being short and men looking down my chest.
- I just don’t like them hanging out. I like them secure and under wraps 🙂
So is cleavage ok? I don’t believe there is a problem with showing your girls off if:
- You’re comfortable.
- It’s done with elegance.
So here are my suggested guidelines for cleavage:
- If you’re sporting a lower neckline, opt for a longer hemline.
- The girls hanging out on more mature aged women can look a little tacky. Forgive me but I must say it – it can look MUTTON! However, if done with simplicity and elegance which means it’s fitted, supported and not too tight, it can work.
- Wear the right bra size because a squeezed together cleavage looks no better than one that has a giant part in between.
- If your cleavage is tumbling out of your dress or top, it’s way too tight. You should be opting for a “pert” look where sometimes less is more.
- Wear it confidently or not at all and avoid tugging at your look. If it feels too low, it probably is.
- Writing this blog, I spoke to a 20 year old male waiter and asked: Q: If you’re with a girlfriend, how would you feel if she was wearing a low, revealing dress? A: No, I would not like it at all. If a private date at home and she was dressed for my eyes only – absolutely.
- The above is NOT a tip, just an interesting piece of information which I also had a chuckle at his response.
Interestingly, if someone says to me: “Cindy, you look sexy today!” I immediately do a rapid scan down at my body to check that the girls are locked in tight!! 🙂 So I even find my own response interesting.
Now in terms of getting your cleavage right, there are a few things you can do.
Firstly, I know having a good bra fitting is something you very rarely (or never) do.
So if you take anything from this blog post, please do this. Get yourself fitted, particularly if you have had weight loss/gain.
Secondly, below are a list of products that I also recommend to enhance or decrease bra size where needed.
Okay so who of you reading this today have outfits in your wardrobe you rarely wear as you’re uncomfortable with its’ cleavage factor?
Or perhaps you do wear them but with safety pins or a cover up?
In contrast, where are all the ladies who don’t mind a little cleavage on display?
Remember, I’m not here to judge, I just think it’s a great fashion topic for us women to discuss with each other and yes, our men.
I’m yet to meet a man who doesn’t love them 🙂
So I’ll hear from you in the comments below? I’ll be waiting.

Hi Cindy, absolutely love the Cue dress. Beautiful Pic. The colouring suits you to a ‘T’. I hope you bought it! Cheers, Fiona Foster

Thanks Fiona…..No I didn’t……I did buy some trousers instead!!! Thanks though xo

Great advice as always Cindy.
We always seem to concentrate on the “outer” look and rarely make the effort or think to have the Underwear just right.
Thanks for bringing it out in the open! x

As an ‘ample’ lady in that department, I find that I like to keep them in and safe also. I may look slimmer in fitted dresses, but when I wear them I notice men staring there which is very uncomfortable!! Personally I find fitted, and V neck (but not too plungy) works for a night out, but is not suitable for daytime viewing!

Nicely said Rebecca!!!

I love the Cue top on you. Well said as usual. I agree with you it looks awful with the girls out especially on a wrinkled décolletage yuk, if you must have them out there keep it classy.
Cindy Newstead says
Agree Jackie!!!!

Hi Ladies, my opinion is that of women with large breasts unless you’re on the beach in swimwear and a little hard to hide the puppies then they are best admired tucked in. Those with smaller breasts or ‘bought’ ones I think can look sexy in a classy way if only a hint of them is showing and the rest left up to the imagination. The amazing Divas of this world from the 50’s & 60’s had amazing figures and never felt the need to show more than necessary and we still today ponder over their beauty.

Thank you for not being super judgey on this subject! As a larger busted lady, a little bit of cleavage is sometimes hard to avoid and while I don’t try for cleavage the way I did in my teens and twenties I can’t help but think some of the talk around it lately has been to the detriment of those who are well endowed.
Like the trends for side boob and tuxedo jackets worn with no tops underneath – any cleavage that is dependent on going bra-less is not really for anyone over a C cup. On the other hand, I won’t be wearing any polo necks either…
Cindy Newstead says
Thanks Jo! No, I cant afford to be too judgmental as many women wear cleavage very well, it all depends on body, size and whether its tasteful or not! 🙂
Cindy Newstead says
Sorry Jo! I thought I had responded to you………probably didn’t go through 🙂 Totally agree! I think if its done with taste and elegance…….not an issue, just pure admiration!!! xo

Hi Cindy, I used to be of the opinion that if you got it, flaunt it!! However, 20 years and lots of hard experiences down the track I now believe that men don’t need any extra encouragement to find us, or our girls, appealing and as such I think that less is more. Give em something for their imagination. In the right clothing us girls rock no matter how much tits or ass we show 🙂
In the bedroom, well, that’s another story!!……
Cindy Newstead says
Ha ha…..Love this…..well said:) 🙂 xo
