How to Shop For Summer in Winter
When you’re seeking a kaftan for your upcoming winter escape, June may not feel like the ideal time to shop.
A sea of black and heavy fabrics can be quite the shopping deterrent when all you need is a bright pair of sandals or a white tee.
Many people go to warm spots for their winter break be it a stunning European destination, sunny Queensland or in my case, a shop and pamper trip to Vietnam.
If you’re anything like me, there’s always going to be a few items of clothing to buy before you leave.
Now this depends on your travel purpose. If you’re on a business trip, you might be seeking some smart, lightweight looks for a conference. In contrast, you might be shopping for a summer dress for a wedding in Fiji.
Sure, Seafolly and the surf shops will always have your back (perhaps not wedding attire) but you’ll be surprised at what else you can find.
Head to your favourite stores – many of them will have a sales rack tucked away with last season’s trends, usually drastically reduced in price.
Many items that didn’t sell at the post Christmas sales will also return for a second round this June – again, heavily discounted!
Of the seasonal items, there are quite a few layering pieces that you can work into your summer holiday look and department stores always have something to offer.
Those up for the challenge, I invite you to put your visual merchandising hat on. Look at the way clothes are presented on mannequins and on the rack as well. Perhaps a sleeveless dress has been placed over a turtleneck or a lightweight singlet is sitting beneath a blazer.
Check for light fabric skirts (minus the tights) and cardigans are great for all year round or for that evening summer beach stroll.
When all else fails, DFO outlets are an excellent option. They hold stock from various seasons and you’re sure to find some great summer pieces with very attractive price tags.
Now, get ready for that winter getaway! 🙂
Hopefully this helps you look beyond the winter woollies and black and grey hues so you can find your way to some great lightweight pieces to relax in.
What warm places are you off to this winter? C’mon make me jealous! Let me know in the comments below or via our social media.

I’m off to Ireland for a little while, then hiring a convertible Mustang for a road trip around California in August! Then doing the opposite – New Year’s Eve in New York – so summer to winter. The trick is to sort out your packing lists early, so I have already made a summer packing list for the August trip while my summer clothes were in use. I am now putting together my winter packing list so that I can pack smartly and light!
