The Ladies Guide to Father’s Day Shopping
Father’s Day is almost upon us and if you weren’t sure, just check your mailbox for the abundance of tool catalogues – this is usually a good indication.
So the day is Sunday September 7 and with this blog post I anticipated that like me, some of you have already begun the “What do I buy this year?” question.
When it comes to gift giving for men, television commercials, catalogues and stores will maximise their commercial opportunity vying to sell you everything from a DVD to a garden tool.
Now of course if your dad is a man who adores tools or technology, by all means, this is a worthwhile gift, however, for something a little different today…I’m guiding you down the clothing/retail path 🙂
While this is a bit more of a challenging gift hunting exercise, I also think it can be one of the most personalised and appreciated when done correctly.
And surprise! Many men really want to look and feel good but don’t know where to start – this is where you can come in.
Begin with a little research:
- Here are a few sporadic questions you can ask your father over the week: Do you like the clothes you are wearing? Is there something in your wardrobe you need? What is your favourite colour to wear?
- If you have access, do a quick review of his wardrobe and observe any “holes” in his collection. What does his style look like and where could a new wardrobe piece fit in? This is also a good way to confirm sizing.
What to look for:
- Avoid the jocks and socks – let’s be a little more adventurous! These items are best reserved for stocking fillers around Christmas time.
- For accessories such as shoes and belts, make sure you know his size or purchase from a store that offers an exchange. Accessories for men are worn moreso for practicality than fashion so it’s important they fit perfectly.
- If you can, I would suggest buying a complete outfit for your dad – this makes it a lot easier to see how he could wear it. (I don’t know too many fathers who do the wardrobe play like we do, so I consider this gift giving with directions).
Finally, I want to leave you with something to consider: When was the last time you asked some of the questions above to your father?
It’s not always about us females. Check in with the dad’s in your life as dressing and feeling the part is a universal thing.
Perhaps they’ve put/lost a little weight and things are not fitting quite as well or are transitioning into a new job or romantic relationship and are in need a style reinvention but may not say it out loud.
These are key areas to pay attention to with Father’s Day a great opportunity to provide some support and thoughtful gifts.
I hope you all enjoy your Fathers Day shop and the day itself for those celebrating.
So now it’s over to you – what have you bought for your dad or what are you thinking about buying?
Let’s get a conversation going and share ideas.

Hi Cindy
I would like to buy my farther some clothes but on looking I cannot find his size in any normal clothes shops. Lowes and kingsize big and tall seem to be my only option at the moment which is not much of an option at all. Any advice on large clothes shops for men?

Hi Lorraine. Thank you for your comment! I would recommend trying Rodd and Gunn at Chadstone as I know they cater for larger sizing. Colorado and Target are also a good options.
I hope this helps!!! 🙂 Cindy x
