Long, Mid or Short: Find Your New Winter Boot
In winter, you’ll find many Melburnians complain about the cold weather or the shorter days.
Me? Well I’m ready to battle the climate elements as I’ve been waiting all year to wear boots!
What’s not to love? They work over jeans and leggings and can breathe life into a summer dress or skirt covering up our bare legs in the cooler weather.
If it’s a chilly evening and I want to work a dress and heel, I can reach for a heeled boot instead to give my legs some warmth.
Oh and flat, knee high boots look oh-so stylish working effortlessly from day to night unlike most flat shoes.
From classic black leather, to rock-worthy embellishments or equestrian-esque styles – feel free to try on some different styles this winter.
This season, I’m delighted to announce that the long boot is back with a vengeance. The last few seasons have seen the ankle boot rule, so welcome back old friend!
In today’s blog, I conducted my own boot tour to source an array of options across different price points. Below, I also answer three of the most common boot questions I get asked:
- What length of boot should I be wearing?
- Can I wear an over the knee boot?
- I love the slouchy mid-calf boot – can I wear this?
So below are a few tips that might help. Let’s go shopping!
- If you have short legs – avoid a mid-calf boot
- If you have long legs, go to town! Over knee and mid to knee will all work for you.
- If your calves are wide, a side zip can be easier. Wide calf boots are available online and at City Chic.
- If your legs and calves are lean (skinny) a boot with leather and elastic is a good option or a boot that’s thicker and ruched.
- If you are wearing a knee-high boot, keep your hem length above the top of the boot.
In terms of trends, you may still see some of the over the knee boots in stores that have made appearances on the runway since 2013. They may remind you of those worn by the ladies of the evening.
Now, unfortunately the only people that can really work this look are those of you with legs that go on for days. (I know this leaves many of us out!)
Over the knee boots are generally a fairly fitted boot and worn best with a shorter hem or for tucking jeans and leggings into. If you do wear this style of boot, keep the top part of your look loose (a shift dress perhaps?) and a long coat or long line cardi over the entire outfit looks super elegant. Monochromatic colours work best here too.
Okay, now it’s actually time to hit the shops.
A final note on leather vs. synthetic fabrics. I’ve always said (like a leather jacket), leather is worth the investment if you’re looking to wear your boots for a season or more.
They’ll last longer, be warmer and more comfortable. If you do go the real leather option, be sure to choose a classic boot that won’t date and is versatile. i.e. Black or brown, minimal detailing etc.
Oh and whichever boot you choose – make sure they are comfortable. You should never have to “break” a boot in.

Hi Cindy – love the choices!
Just wondering if you have seen a flat camel-coloured boot in your travels? Can’t find one anywhere and would love to have them to throw on for every day wear rather than a boot with heels.
Thanks!

What a perfect post for today Cindy! Boots are totally the sliver lining on the rain clouds! Tell us about the outfit, I love the flowing shirt with cute little black thing over the top business.
Am wondering if you are in cahoots with Mecca Cosmetica in trying to make it hard for me to pay the mortgage… just got your email update with those gorgeous Edward Mellor numbers almost the very minute I had one from Mecca with their latest pricey goodies!
Sadly I can’t go the faux leather option as my feet get ridiculously hot in them. Not in a cosy enjoyable way. In a horrible, get these off me NOW and put them in the rubbish way. Worth thinking about if you’re tempted to go cut price ladies.

Thanks Kate! The little black thing is and edgy little knit from last season Thurley……there is something similar this season 🙂 Some women are vegan and wont wear leather, I do understand…..your feet can sweat in the synthetic boots. No……not in cahoots with anyone……things come our way for a reason 🙂 🙂 xx
