The Scuba Fabric Making a Splash this Season
Keeping on top of new trends can be tough which is why I like to sift through the best ones to publish here on the blog.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to a new trend making waves – the Scuba fabric.
Back in 2012, designers including Stella McCartney and Michael Kors began exploring “neoprene” as a fashion fabric.
We already know the fabric performs well in water (the wetsuit), and now it’s arrived on land and I think you’ll love the look and low maintenance of this fabric.
Firstly, scuba is 100% synthetic which makes it completely wrinkle free. Yes – you can literally wash and wear. Oh and if you do happen to spill liquid on it, it will run right off!
It is also a lightweight fabric which will hold its’ shape and is very comfortable to wear.
The trend carries on from last season’s Sports Luxe, which was a relaxed take on glamour. This also reflects a growing trend of designers leaning on sports-inspired style which is great for those who love fuss free styles tied in with practical fabrics.
So this season, ‘scuba’ will be used in an array of clothing styles such as tops, jackets and even skirts, expect it in all cuts and shapes; the pencil, full, mini and very elegant midi-length skirt.
The fabric also makes for great pleating so look out for peplum styles and mini pleated skirts. (Style Note: Pleats will also be plentiful this season across other styles as well).
So below I have showcased a few scuba looks I have found all within different price brackets.
So I hope you enjoy today’s colourful blog and I would love to hear your thoughts on this fabric trend. Have you tried it before? Do you love/hate it? I look forward to speaking to you on Facebook or in the comments below.

Bring it on! Never heard of it as a dress fabric… but as a triathlete and circus performer I do live in neoprene and lycra a bit! How is it different from lycra? is it much thicker? Thanks for sharing Cindy.
Cindy Newstead says
Yes it’s a lot thicker Karin but very light and very comfortable to wear, so I hope you give it a go 🙂
Janet says
Neoprene is an allergen. I bought beautiful looking neopren fabric zipped lunchboxes/baskets from KIckstarter and they stank and I had instant asthma.
Cindy Newstead says
That’s no good Janet, thanks for letting everyone know so those that might have a reaction are aware.
Jackie Green says
I’m so glad I have my Padi open water card.
Scuba I’m so yesterday I thought Sport Luxe was this year. Like the fact if you spill liquid it’s easy, that’s a good one for me. Anything you don’t have to iron, that is less fuss is a win / win..
Cindy Newstead says
Right with you Jackie, it’s an easy pack, easy to care for, so overall a great product, and you could also wear it doing your scuba diving 🙂
Nikki says
Hi Cindy,
Great fabric, as you mentioned.
Have done some work with it on some of our clients at The Glen and the results are very pleasing. Portmans do have a really good selection and the beauty is that the quality is consistant. The colours are good too and for all us black and white girls it opens up new opportunities to mix and match. The girls with a bit of a tummy love it!
Thanks for bringing attention to this new, workable trend x
Cindy Newstead says
Thanks Nikki, hope to see you in some soon, possibly colour! 🙂 🙂 xo
Kim Kennedy says
Yes, cool. I like it. You look lovely too xx
Cindy Newstead says
Thanks Kim, hope you have some fun with this fabric xo
