Guide to Wearing Jeans

Jeans are a versatile staple in most of our wardrobes as they can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

As much as they become the go to piece for many, a lot of my clients are looking to get out of living in their jeans and evolve their style.

Personally, apart from black coated jeans in winter and white in summer, I avoid jeans.

Why? Well for me, I love dresses and skirts and well… everything else!!

From my experience as we mature we do tend to move away from the casual look of jeans.

For others who shop with myself and other Stylists, being shown the perfect pair of jeans for their body shape is like finding the holy grail!

But that is the great thing about fashion and style.. it is always evolving… and we all have our own individual style personalities.

For those that love wearing jeans, I have created some looks for you to recreate in your wardrobe and included a few pointers on wearing jeans with style.

Black Denim

Black Denim is both casual and smart. Great to dress up and down, and an alternative to the black trouser.

Choosing a style with metallic accents and clever zips also add interest and elevate your look.

Dark Denim

The most elegant of the types of denim and easily transitioned from day to night with a change of accessories.

In the below pic, Rachel is wearing a fun casual top for everyday wear, but swap this top with a dressier option for a casual dinner or add a change of shoes to head out for a night on the town.

Blue Denim

Mid wash or light denim/ faded jeans are the most casual option and an effortless everyday look.

The key is to understand that where you have fading, rips or distressing is where other’s eyes are drawn to.

For example, if you are concerned with your thighs, wearing jeans with ‘whiskers’ and fading at your heaviest point this will only highlight this area.

Top Tips for Wearing Jeans

Think of your hems!

We are all different heights, shapes and sizes but regardless many people will buy a pair of jeans off the rack and not even think about the leg length.

Long and dragging is not a great look!

Rolled up at the bottom is an easy way to get around this BUT– not great unless it’s a slim leg

SOLUTION: Buy 2 pairs – One hemmed to a heel height one to wear with flats!

Body Shape!

Different cuts and styles work for different body shapes & features.

I would love to provide you a generic body shape/jeans guide but it is not that simple!

You may be a particular body shape but you will also have unique features.

Take Rachel for example, she is an hourglass body shape however she can not wear all style of jeans due to larger calves and must wear high waisted jeans due to her tiny waist.

Book a session with a personal stylist to find your perfect cut of jean and you will not look back!

Colour can make or break a body shape!

While you may love the look of a white jean or a light blue denim – it may not love you back!

If you are heavier on your bottom half this will only make you look bigger than you are.

Stick to darker denim!

Accessorise!!

Jeans and a knit are a simple and easy look for Winter but can fall a bit flat for those that like to make a statement in their style.

The below look would be quite uninteresting without the addition of the scarf & platform sneakers.

Seed : Ruby/Red/PL Scarf $49.95, Criss Cross Knit $129.95 Black Jeans $89.95 White Casual Runners $129.95

Prefer a more simple look with your jeans?

Go for a detailed sleeve or cable knit.

Not all knits are created equal!

Go for a knit that works for your shape!

This one for Rachel highlights her waist and creates a feminine shape, where as a boxier shapeless cut envelopes her!

With this look, you could easily wear with a casual flat, ankle boots or knee high boots.
