How To Love The Skin You’re In
There is a change in the air… the warmer weather and blue skies hinting that our winter outfits need
storing away and our Spring and Summer clothing needs its time in the sun!
A lot of you will be thinking … I don’t think I’m ready to bare more skin to the world!
How do I know this? Well apart from the fact that I, myself have these thoughts flash across my
mind every year, my clients this month have mostly begun their consultation with this very concern.
You may remember I touched on this issue when I debuted some Spring looks in my September blog,
talking varicose veins and pale skin the fears we have about showing our ‘bits’.
This time of year I find myself very emotionally impacted by my client’s self-reporting on how they see themselves.
Negative opinions and cloudy judgement are affecting their self-esteem and flowing into many aspects of their life.
I feel an immense sense of responsibility to dislodge the negative self-talk and allow both men and women to see the beautiful person they truly are, who deserves to feel great each and every day.
Through my many years, I am lucky to have cultivated inspirational words that encourage my clients to see how beautiful they are. The benefits of high self-esteem are too monumental to be ignored, having a healthy self-esteem is a hugely positive influence in one’s life. I feel very honoured to be able to share in someone’s journey and help them to make a positive shift in their lives.
When I see the fog lifting from my client’s eyes after some time together, it fills me with such joy as I know while personal styling is the business of improving a person’s exterior appearance it is most importantly promoting a change of perception of their inner selves.
They look great, but they FEEL great, and that positivity projects itself to everyone and is then returned!
Self-confidence is the key to looking and feeling your very best. A beautiful smile is the best accessory that you can own, and a smile is so infectious that you will radiate beauty to everyone around you and in some small way, it will make their day a little brighter too.
I also love bringing colour and personality into my client’s look to brighten their mood and to allow them to express their individuality and creativity. Their sense of style is a reflection of who they are and boy, is it beautiful seeing someone’s authentic self! It is so fantastic to see someone rocking their own style or a bold colour choice that brings out their playfulness, passion or creativity.
This weekend my incredible stylist Josie conducted a Style Workshop in Melbourne with fabulous women who were having a bit of a laugh about their recent style faux pas.
When the women were given their body shape category, they learnt the do’s and don’ts of styling their shape.
One of our attendees had an inverted triangle shape and was reflecting on purchases she had made this season of dresses & tops with cut out arms which are of course very on trend this season.
It then dawned on our beautiful client that she was drawing attention to an area she in fact needed to minimise! In order to create balance, she focused on how to attract attention to the lower half of her body instead, as she has fabulous legs and didn’t even know it!
So, why do I bring this up? Well, it’s to remind you that while we all have ‘bits’ and insecurities that can be somewhat compounded by a little winter weight, there is nothing that positive thinking and a little clever styling can’t solve.
If our beautiful client was to wear and a cap sleeve or ¾ sleeve with a maxi skirt, straight leg white jeans or ¾ pants there would be a beautiful balance there drawing attention away from the arms and creating a style and a self-confidence win!
Josie and Rachel were remarking to me on Monday how kind and supportive the women all were with each other at the workshop, and how special that was to see.
The women, all complete strangers before the day, brought out the best in each other, remarking on other’s beautiful inner and outer qualities and empathising with them on their struggles with their wardrobe and how they are feeling.
They talked about many different and amazing things at the workshop table, including their incredible life experience, careers, families and friends while creating their mood boards, and each and every one of them brought something very unique and special. Their lives were all rich of kindness, humour and generosity of spirit which they all shared with one another.
Now that is beautiful!!!
So, while I have captured your hearts and minds a little, and hopefully inspired some positive self-talk I want to share with you a passion of mine, which makes me light up from the inside out!
Hopefully I can inspire you to think positive and show a little leg or maybe a little arm this season 😉
So in the spirit of doing what makes you feel more confident, for me, it’s disguising my ‘bits’ behind my favourite fashion pieces.
One clever little number for winter weight, which is hard to go past .. is an A-line dress!
An A-line dress can allow us a bit more space around a well-rested derriere and wobbly thigh area.
Here I have some gorgeous pieces that allows you to dip your toe in the new season colour palette.
This dress from French Connection suits most shapes but is particularly genius for a triangle, with its horizontal stripes up top and vertical stripes below it is one very smart dress!
How cute is this white dress from Cue? 60’s vibe, feminine, fresh and perfect for disguising a winter tummy, or a year-long tummy for that matter! It’s a fabulous length for Spring and Summer the sleeves are perfect for those that feel better with a bit of a coverage.
This dress from Cue I have selected for you as an excellent example of how one simple feature can have an impact on your overall shape. Notice the dark side panels on this dress? While a sophisticated style choice for the visual eye it also cleverly disguises generous hips and thighs giving a sleeker appearance.
I could not go past this beautiful pop of colour! French Connection channelling the off the shoulder trend with a beautiful dress with incredible movement. The waistline really cinches the waist and an hourglass would look spectacular in this style! Perfect for a night out or even dressed down for a barbeque or day in the park I am loving this dress!
How are you feeling after Winter?
