The Guilt to Shop!
So many times over the years I have shopped with clients who has at one point expressed her guilt over spending on herself!
I was reminded of this again recently as I was nearing the end of a shop wth a regular client of mine who said:
“It’s amazing as I feel guilty about spending on myself, I even find it hard walking around with these bags, it’s actually embarrassing!”
This client shops with me regularly, and when I mentioned this to her, she replied:
“Yes but it is justified as I have a wardrobe that works, it saves me time and I love how that feels!”
Of course, I can relate to my client, we all can!
So much of that guilt, we feel is in embedded in us as a young woman growing up.
If money was tight, school fees were the priority and spending on oneself was labelled frivolous.
I remember my Mum always put everything else first, she was however even in the tight times able to pull the odd rabbit out of her hat with very inexpensive clothing for herself and me to keep us relatively stylish.
I remember a stage when money was very tight and I was about to start work on a cash register in Woolies, she took me to ‘Fossy’s’ in Frankston for a big shop, cheap but it did the trick at this point!
What is interesting is how we prioritise what is important.
As I asked my client, ” How do you feel with all your clothes these days?”
The answer: “I love it and I feel great!”
I believe if you feel great, it has a domino effect on those around you!
Please remember $$ are not the point here!
She feels great, avoids shops with misses and mistakes, and shows self-care and pride to herself and her family.
How do we avoid the guilt?
Perhaps we don’t, but we replace it with the benefits as well as the question to ourselves:
“How do I feel at the moment?”
Women endure and take on so much in their lives, so feel good, look good for you!
- Give yourself permission!
- Where could you cut out costs to invest in you a bit more?
- Plan a monthly spend on yourself! Remember, fashion doesn’t have to be expensive!
- Extend the hair, wax, tan, nails out by an extra 2 weeks to enable extra funds to purchase that great top or dress you love!
- Sale racks! You can buy that statement piece at half the original price!
Do you feel guilty about spending on you?

Loved this article Cindy. I certainly havr felt these sentiments too. However when you do put effort into what you are wearing it does seem to give you a lift and especially if genuinely complimented.
