Top 3 Tips to Trend Spend from Melbourne Fashion Festival
Do you remember when you were a little girl (or little boy!) and you would count down excitedly to every special occasion…I’m sure I drove my family crazy with daily countdowns for everything from birthdays to Christmas and Easter. It was the anticipation and promise of such a wonderful time and sometimes I would find my mind wandering from what I was meant to be concentrating on to thinking about these exciting times!
Well, I have something to confess!
As an adult, there is one very special event that brings about those very same feelings of excitement and butterflies in my tummy that I felt as a child! In fact, I still get tingles when its on!
Of course, I am talking about our wonderful city’s annual event, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, which is now in full swing!
I know many of you will be attending this amazing event. Aside from showcasing the latest fashion designers’ collections and offerings from fashion houses and stores, it always proves to be a fantastic overall show!
I just love the incredible set up of the stages and runways, with spectacular lighting and cool music, which collaborate perfectly to provide a kaleidoscope of colour! And I admit it, I’m like a kid in a sweet store when it comes to viewing the latest styles and trends.
In my experience as a personal stylist, I know that some of the trends, can prove to be a little bit tricky for some of us to wear on a day to day basis, and some trends can look a little overdone when strolling through our local supermarket or dropping the kids off to school. Yet sometimes in our excitement, we can overlook whether a trend would suit us or if a colour will bring out our best, so I’ve put together my top three tips to help you get the most out of Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival so you enjoy your season’s buys time after time!
Tip One: Tone Down, Try Not To Over-Trend
The key to interpreting seasonal trends is to, rather than buy every single capsule piece in the collection, tone down and select just one or two key pieces. For example, if shades of yellow are proving a popular choice of colour palette, rather than risk looking like Big Bird from Sesame Street, pick a pair of heels or necklace to make a statement, while still being on trend. For this season we are seeing an abundance of maroons, navy and greys!

Tip Two: Don’t Over-Spend!
The beauty of fashion is that each season we are presented with, what I call, a flash trend. It’s typically an inspired theme (think Military or the Seventies), with fabrics cut in a very current style, or presented in a key colour. While it might be tempting to spend heaps on a coat or evening dress in the season’s trend, you may only get a few wears out of it before next season’s new flavour! Over-spending on flash trends is how we ladies end up needing a wardrobe overhaul, with a full wardrobe of clothes…and nothing to wear!

Tip Three: Trend Investment Pieces
There are, of course, certain trends that make an appearance every few seasons that stand the test of time and that have lasting appeal. You really can’t go wrong with investing in a smart trench-style coat in a neutral tone or a beautiful, wool coat that is the perfect cut for your shape and hugs to your curves in all the right places. Look for quality trends that have a long shelf-life (or wardrobe life!) and you’ll enjoy wearing it for years to come.
