Your Winter Accessories Guide

Once the cold snap really hits us in winter, we automatically reach for  layers and layers of clothing to keep us warm. Traditionally we seem to steer towards the darker colours and tones of black, grey, brown and navy, and colours seem to get forgotten! Sometimes it can even feel like we are in hibernation! That our comfort and need to feel warm and toasty takes precedence to feeling stylish!

If you feel like this in winter, there are ways to brighten up and add fun to your outfit, and it all comes down to how you wear winter accessories! I love the range of winter accessories that are in our stores at the moment! Stunning scarves in a variety of colours and fabrics, stylish hats in all shapes and sizes and of course, jewellery, in all different lengths and designs. This week, I’ll be showing you how to play around with winter accessories so you feel super-stylish all winter long!

This is just to show you that both of these items suit me however, the one of the left is slightly more overwhelming than the one on the right

Scarves

Wool knit scarves work really well when you wear them over similar fabrics. The key is to balance out the textures to keep your outfit looking streamlined. For example, a chunky knit scarf looks great when worn layered over a slim fitting knit jumper or cardigan. It can be worn draped around the neck so that the ends hang either side at the same length to create a slimline look or it can be worn draped once around the neck to draw attention to the upper part of your body.

Pashmina and cashmere scarves feel so luxurious and can be worn in a number of ways. Draping them over your shoulders so that the lengths hang freely can create a kimono-style look and looks amazing over a beautiful three quarter length dress, or trousers and top. You can also create really interesting necklines when you wrap one length around one shoulder, creating the effect of a shrug. These fabrics are also really warm and keep you toasty on cold nights out.

Silk fabric scarves or lightweight fabric mixes in a variety of colours are a great way to brighten up your outfit if you are wearing a solid block of dark colour. You can get creative too with how you style them! A scarf styled in a loose pussy-bow knot can create interest over a plain long sleeve top. Or fashion a simple tie from one of your favourite scarfs and wear it loose at the neck. Also, you could try looping your scarf around your neck so it fits snug at the neckline and the two ends hang loose, lengthening your look. Play around with different ways to style your scarves with different outfits!

Hats

I love the variety of hats in the stores at winter! There are just so many to choose from and they can really change up the whole feel of your outfit! From comfortable casual to stylishly chic, they can make your outfit look completely different. Chunky knit hats and beanies are, aside from being super cosy, fun and casual. They look great when colour matched with your scarf and also can hide a ‘bad hair day’!

You really can’t go wrong with a black hat in a Panama or Trilby style. They are timeless and look amazing with a blazer and jeans, or a smart-casual styled suit or even a fantastic long length dress. You can also dress them up or down depending on the occasion. Have you ever thought about adding your favourite brooches or pins to the hat?! This looks great and is a really cool way to add your own personality to your hat. Thin, lightweight scarves can also be wrapped around and pinned into place to add colour and create a different look!

Jewellery

As you will know from photos on my Facebook and Instagram platforms, I love my statement jewellery pieces! They can add really interesting details to your outfit and with such a variety of colours and styles out there, you can keep changing the look of a simple winter outfit!

They key to wearing statement jewellery pieces is to choose colours that enhance your natural skin tones and body shape. For example, if you feel like you have a wider neck or have a round face, it’s best to avoid choker style necklaces or thick beaded styles, as they will shorten your neck. Instead, choose longer length necklaces to create a leaner body shape.

Chunky style bracelets look fantastic when layered on your arm. Choose two or three of your favourites in similar muted tones or ultra-bright colours for a funky look. You could also try layering your necklaces too! If New York socialite and fashionista Iris Apfel can carry it off, so can you! It’s all about having fun with colour and new ways to wear your favourite pieces to show off your personality!
