Who has not finished their Christmas shopping yet?

That’s okay, let’s not get into a festive panic as you have approximately one week to go and I’m here to lend some guidance on how to tackle your Christmas shopping with ease – after all, this blog post is written by a professional shopper, serial shopper (shopaholic?), well someone with shopping expertise!

This week is actually a great week to shop in-store because most online retailers have closed their Christmas shipping deadlines which has translated to many stores extending their trading hours and expected to offer discounts and offers right up to Christmas Eve.

Today I’ve split this blog into two helpful sections: Tips for shopping and gift ideas.

Shopping Tips

• The list. Many of us use a shopping list so successfully at the supermarket and forget how useful it can be for Christmas shopping. Create a list of people you are buying for and beside each name, list one or two gift ideas. Next, hop online and download a map of your shopping destination (or obtain one from the information centre) so you can plan an effective route to cover the shops on your list with navigating precision!

• Attempt to shop in the stores closest to the entrance of where you have parked. Sounds simple, but when buying in large quantities, it gives you the option to drop presents off to the car or leave larger items or presents you would like gift wrapped to pick up on your way back. We shouldn’t always rely on the arms of a shopping buddy!

• Utilize staff whether they’re in-store, at an information counter or directive staff, they are there to assist you and can speed up your shopping expedition. Rather than wandering around a shop aimlessly to try and find an item, ask a shop assistant for help. They may even suggest something better or refer you to another retailer who can help.

• Know your pricing as this will avoid running around comparing products and stores. The best way is to do some online research before you shop and know where you’ll find the bargains. As always, pricing links to a budget, stick with yours as no-one wants to dread their post Christmas credit card bill.

• Buy in bulk on smaller items. For example, chocolates, stationary, iTunes vouchers or books are items that can be spread out across a few people or as stocking fillers. You can tick a lot off the list in just one store this way and they’re also a great option for an office K.K recipient.

• If you are clothes shopping for yourself, do your research and know your body shape and size to avoid queues. And yes, sometimes queues are inevitable this time of year, so in this case, place the item on hold for 10 minutes while you keep shopping. There’s a good chance the line may reduce upon your return.

GIFT IDEAS

So you’ve got your list of people to buy for and are out of ideas? Well rather than give you ‘actual’ gift ideas, I have some tips to ignite your own giftspiration:

• Always endeavour to match a gift to someone’s personality particularly if it is clothing or jewellery. Pay attention to what they currently wear, colours they like (or ones that look good on them) or anything you’ve seen worn or dated that you might be able to replace.

• Amusing gifts are always well received for the humorous recipient. For example, Urban Attitude at Chadstone has an array of unique gifts including travel scratch maps, books, quirky gadgets and crockery with witty quotes. Again, do a little research on your person to source something that connects to the person or their interests in some way.

• The sentimental gift is always greatly appreciated if you are close with the person. Reflect on fond past memories and try to link it to something special. For example, there could be a certain coloured dress your lady spouse was wearing on the day or a shirt your partner was wearing that you could attempt to source a replica. Also, bounded photo books are beautiful gifts as in a digital/smartphone camera world, it’s easy to forget to print photos as keepsakes. Your recipient will love this personalized gift.

• Pay attention to the person’s hobbies, be it a sport, craft or perhaps they might be an avid traveller. Decide on a price point and research what reputable brands are linked to their hobby. i.e. Nike for runners, Lonely Planet books for travellers. Whatever their hobby, for example travel, it’s important to consider the type of travel they do and be specific to their needs.

• Buying for an acquaintance of colleague? Food! This is such a wonderful option as it’s not too personal and the season offers festive options including Christmas puddings, cookies or desert wine. Find out what food they like and try to find a gourmet version. Always keep in mind any known food allergies and seek out alternative products if you can. i.e. Nut free chocolate, gluten-free jam.
