VAMFF Runway 6: Harpers Bazaar

VAMFF’s final runway featured some of Australia’s most illustrious designers including Alex Perry, Arthur Galan AG, Carla Zampatti, Ellery, Lui Hon, Sass & Bide and Yeojin Bae.

In anticipation that VAMFF would save the best until last, we sat on the edge of our seats watching the models showcase some beautiful looks which explored classic lines, edgy evening wear and impeccable tailoring.

The stand out labels included Sass & Bide, Alex Perry with Carla Zampatti stealing the limelight.

 

Sass and Bide brought a warm colour palette of yellow and gold teamed with navy and white. Unlike their last collection, these pieces featured less embellishment with a larger focus on geometric and eclectic prints to bring the wow factor.

Alex Perry exchanged his usual floor length pieces for mini and midi ensembles. Black structured dresses reigned, showcasing beautiful feminine silhouettes but there was also a touch of yellow print.

 

On a side note, yellow was a very dominant colour at VAMFF so look for it streaming through winter’s dark colour palette in the coming months.

Carla Zampatti brought a tough spin or her usual classic eveningwear. Her runway saw a series of black gowns featuring cut-outs, mixed materials (chiffon teamed with silk) and a touch of sequins. There was also one structured white dress with a strong shoulder feature echoing this seasons cape trend.

There were a few selected pieces from Ellery that we think could be worn stand-alone, very eclectic styling here while Arthur Galan AG exercised his usual business-inspired style with a on-trend injection. His collection played with a dark, monochromatic palette of black, grey, teal and plum showcased in boxy jackets teamed with structured leather and sheer pieces.

We felt Yeoin Bae and Lui Hon both missed the mark in terms of their shapes and colour palettes.

Bae’s beautiful tailoring was evident however the gelato tones were not quite right while some of the splits in her skirts were super high and in odd places. So visually they look great however they are not very practical.

We also felt Lui Hon’s collection featured pieces that were overly voluminous. Again, this could have been in the styling as we found some of the looks consuming the models rather than working to their body shape.

So that’s a wrap for the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival 2014. We loved the runways and the extravagant opening show along with the opportunity to support Australian fashion.
