Mother’s Day 2020
I love Mother’s Day, I always have as a mum from age 21.
Having four sons is the joy of my life, the best of my achievements.
These days Mother’s Day is also shrouded in a cloud of sadness and pain at the loss of my mum. I know many of you will feel some pain or loss.
I think for many people around Australia this year is a difficult one.
This year, here in Melbourne with the Covid-19 restrictions, I’m not sure how the day will play out.
Unfortunately a visit to my mother in law who I adore is off the table at the moment, but I will visit my mum’s memorial, and hopefully that I will virtually see my boys.
We might not be able to see loved ones in person but it is still important to mark the occasion.
I think a very quintessential tradition is a Mother’s Day lunch.
Whether you have it at home or out every year, try and recreate that magic!
Get dressed up for a lunch at home if you are missing that, or stay in your comfiest of clothes and have a virtual lunch, whatever it might be, just make sure it’s something you feel great doing.

I think it is easy for us to say ‘oh no don’t worry about it’ or ‘next year’ or ‘when we can catch up we will do something’ but I think for our mental health we need to make these days special.
Check out the local stores in your area doing takeaway Mother’s Day meals, don’t cook, let someone else cook for you.
Take a long walk, listen to music, a podcast, just take a breath, take time out for yourself.
I know these times are tough, but it is really important to have things to look forward to and to feel good about ourselves.

It is easy to relegate our needs to the background but we shouldn’t. It isn’t being selfish, its refueling, so you can give everyone around you the energy they deserve too.
A lot of you will be buying gifts for mothers or have special people in your life asking you what you would like this year.
I thought I would touch on a few of the ideas that I think are really special.
A lot of women are asked every year ‘what would you like for Mother’s Day?’
If you are thinking of gift ideas for yourself maybe think about something you can celebrate when our world opens up to us again, I highly recommend asking for an experience voucher.
I really want you to think about doing something just for you – you aren’t being selfish – you are recharging. I’m talking about a massage voucher, facial, yoga classes, whatever gorgeous experience you would love to pamper yourself with- go for it!
You could also do a local winery voucher for a tour or meal, we have hot springs here in Melbourne or gold class tickets to go to the movies with a friend. There are so many wonderful experiences out there to try.
I really want the emphasis to be on choosing something for you, or agreeing that when we can all resume normal life, you have a day, or weekend or a week, that you can focus on recharging, doing something solo or with friends outside of being ‘mum’.
We offer personal styling gift vouchers – that’s a perfect example of doing something just for you, something that will improve your life. It is also an experience that many women tell me they have been wanting to do forever, and wish they had done sooner. We all do this, we all put our needs and wants on hold as we put our family first. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to say ‘YES I deserve this!’
Maybe a voucher for a local beauty place or Mecca that you can spend on some yummy cosmetics or beautiful creams. Whatever you feel like you can’t buy for yourself I want you to do it!!
Some other ideas are there are some fantastic delivery gift companies and local stores who have pivoted their businesses into making hampers and delivering gifts for Mother’s Day, just check out what is happening in your local community online on their social media pages.
There are some beautiful Australian companies on a wonderful instagram account @ladystartups that has a huge range of beautiful products and services that you can discover from from jewellery to bags and gift boxes so check that out.
There are also stores open locally, with reduced hours, with sanitiser and limits of people per store who have beautiful gifts.
Locally you can pick things up like a beautiful winter scarf which is a lovely gift and perfect for the season.
I also love candles, Glasshouse candles are my favourite, a beautiful fragrance can really ground you and they have hand cream too, I think we all need that at the moment, something organic and fragrant is lovely. You can also find Glasshouse at David Jones if you have no luck locally.
There is a flower delivery company called Lvly who do flowers, hand creams, candles, wine and chocolate. Absolutely beautiful!

A little outside of the box, a kindle is a fantastic idea at the moment, download books directly to your device and read on the screen. Sounds like more screen time I know, but the screen looks like paper, its fantastic and something that will be used for years.
One of my favourite ideas for a gift for yourself or your mum is a piece of jewellery.
Pick something that you can treasure that will be special for years, and a sweet idea is to buy one for yourself and one for mum. They can be identical or a different stone, but something that you both share.
A favourite of mine is Nicole Fendel, who is a wonderful designer and creator from Melbourne. My hot tip for selecting jewellery is to wear silver with cool skin, gold with warm skin and rose gold can suit either.
I hope I have inspired you with some ideas for this Mother’s Day and would love to hear about your plans and wish list
