Home Personal Stylist Blog Every Day Style How To Layer Up Without Bulking Up

How To Layer Up Without Bulking Up

Layering is generally considered one of the most challenging styles however it’s also one of the most clever and effective strategies for dressing.

How you layer will greatly depend on your body size and your lumps and bumps.

When we talk about layering items think waterfall cardigans, leather leggings, shirts under preppy jumpers and dresses with tights.

Sound bulky? Not really.

While many women won’t attempt layering for fear that they might look larger (and yes, if done incorrectly, you might), a perfectly layered look can actually accentuate your silhouette and make you appear slimmer while drawing attention to all the right places.

Now, contrary to the actual definition of layering, it’s important not to add BULK with your items which really equates to adding WEIGHT to your overall look.

So today I’m going to reveal the not-so-secret (or difficult) ways to layer to help you bring both warmth and style to your winter wardrobe.

But before we launch into the layering style guidelines, a reminder that thin layers and mixed textures are key to this look. Any under layers should always be thin and if you’re bulking up top, keep the bottom of your look streamlined. Here we go!

1. Ensure you own the wardrobe layering basics: cardigans and long sleeved t-shirts

2. Tone-on-tone is a great way to achieve an effortless approach to layering (try winter whites or navy hues this season)

3. Play with textures and different fabrics and use a mix of materials. Too much of the same thing will make you appear larger

4. Opt for neutral colours underneath and bold colours on top. Also have the under layers peeking through. I.e. a top peeking out under a blazer sleeve or a collar peeking out through a simple jumper neckline

5. Layering calls for different lengths and styles so try a short sleeve top over a long sleeve top or a V-neck over a scoop neck. This will make for an interesting look and is great when different colours are combined

6. This seasons cape is made for layering. Many cape sleeves might only reach the elbow (bell sleeves) making it the perfect cover up over your long sleeve top. These can also include ponchos!

7. Length and proportion is key when it comes to accessories. A draped scarf can elongate you and cover your tummy while tights under a dress tucked into knee high boots will offer slimming and textured contrast.

8. Hourglasses – you are the lucky layering few. Wrap a waist belt around your entire look to complete it.

Now there are of course layering limits to avoid bulk so I usually suggest no more than three items. (i.e. two tops and a cover up).

Finally, here is where to buy some of these lovely layering items:

Wool Cardigans: Cotton-On, Tempt, Metalicus, Kookai, Country Road and Forever New

Wide Strap Singlets: Country Road, David Lawrence and Target

Long Sleeve T-Shirts: Cotton On, Sussan, Country Road, Target and Metalicus.

Now, I don’t ask you very often but if you are keen to share your own layering look, I would love to see some photos which you can upload on our Facebook page.

Otherwise let us know what you struggle with, any alternative tips you have for layering or what look you like best.

Let’s get a conversation going, we don’t have much time to prepare for the cooler months.

I have found that Snowgum icebreaker range has the best Merino wool singlets and tops for layering. They are warm and very thin in neutral colours that can be worn under anything. They all have low neck lines so most of the time they can be hidden under tops. The spaghetti strap singlets have adjustable straps (like a bra) so the they can be adjusted to suit the neckline of pieces on top. The best part of the icebraker range is they are machine washable and don’t actually need washing much, airing is usually sufficient and they don’t get smelly.
