Spring Racing looks by the Majors
Melbourne Spring Fashion Week is usally our first chance to see Spring Racing trends for the year. I’ve picked out some of the best looks from the recent David Jones and Myer runways and some great Review looks at MSFW. If racing isn’t on your agenda, take note anyway as the featured looks offer beautiful outfit ideas that could double for spring and summer weddings and dinner parties.
David Jones Runway (all styles available at David Jones)
A perfectly classic outfit for the racing season. A knee length fitted skirt with a slim, tailored jacket is jazzed up in a matching sky blue and with floaty transparent sleeves. A casual straw hat plays everything down. Melbourne weather is unpredictable so a jacket is absolutely necessary.
Digital prints are right on trend so try one out. A classic silhouette like this below the knee, fitted style keeps the overall look toned down, leaving the attention on your dress print. Accessories in neutral tones will balance everything out. If I had been styling this show I would have paired this below-the-knee hem with a lower ankle strap so as not to cut off the length of the leg.
A simple lace tee shirt dress is perfect for a slightly more petite figure, though a curvy shape will look gorgeous in this style with a simple belt in a contrast colour. A chic and classic look for Derby Day.
Two very different spring racing suits – both perfectly fitting for a day at the races! Keep things tailored no matter what the style, opting for a fitted blazer buttoned up at the front, or a slim open front style that shows of a simple blouse underneath. A double floral print is very spring, but a navy block colour is oh so chic for the races. Both looks are great with a pop of colour on the feet.
This look was the highlight of the Myer & VRC 50 years of Fashions on the Field runway, with a classic fitted dress jazzed up with a flattering capelet. A simple straw fascinator and light sandals played down the drama of the combination. A very chic outfit.
Review certainly knows how to put together a spring racing wardrobe! In this look, a colourful pleated a-line skirt is balanced nicely with a form fitting blazer in a contrast print. Keep things floral and fresh for spring and try mixing prints with block colour.
A slightly corporate style yet very sophisticated for race day. Match a slim pencil skirt with a boxy blazer, ensuring that your blazer is cropped at the hip to flatter your figure. Try coloured accessories to give your outfit a little pizzazz.
A boat style neckline is very flattering in the 1960’s esque number, with a slightly fitted outline flattering the silhouette.
