The nine step summer wardrobe
The end of Winter. It’s a scary time of year for most women. A few extra kilos, and a white winter body. I don’t think there is anything we dread more than stepping out in our first Spring dress of the season. I bravely bared my legs for the first time yesterday, and while waiting for my morning coffee, a young man commented on my lovely spring dress. It was new (from Zara!) so I was thrilled, but I also wondered if he, and everybody else, had noticed my long white limbs so unashamedly exposed.
In any case, the day’s event inspired me to put on my Wardrobe Stylist hat and do my wardrobe change over, so I thought I’d share with you some tips on the best way to start this somewhat arduous, yet very rewarding mission. Just don’t start it at midnight like I did!!
Try to keep the following questions in mind while sorting through your current wardrobe, you only want to hold onto the useful pieces.
Did I wear this this season?
Does this fit me?
Will I wear this again next Winter?
Is this looking too shabby? (shabby is not chic!)
So, let’s get started.
1. Put some music on, whatever you work best with. The idea is to create a space you feel comfortable and relaxed in.
2. Start by taking out your heavier, more bulky winter shoes. You’ll notice these are the shoes you haven’t been wearing for a few weeks now.
3. Remove all thick, heavy coats. It’s a good idea to leave one on standby, especially if you live in Melbourne!
4. Look carefully through your trousers and jeans, you want to keep just a couple hanging (hopefully you won’t need them!).
5. Winter skirts and dresses, remove all your darker Winter colours and heavy materials, but keep a couple of the trans-seasonal ones handy.
6. Finally, the wardrobe staples. Any knits, long sleeve tee’s, etc. that are pilled, worn out, or misshaped…… LET THEM GO!
7. Having removed all your Winter clothes it’s time to sort out which are the keepers. Keepers are to be stored away – zip lock bags from the $2 shop are great for this! Anything you don’t want to keep can be sold at markets, or on eBay, then you can use this money to fund your new Spring wardrobe!
8. Now, take a look at what is left and make a list of what you need, and what you would like for the new season.
9. Grab some magazines, walk through the shops, or come along to my runway show to gather some ideas (its on this Oct 15th!). Remember to consider your body shape, your lifestyle, and your colouring, that way you won’t waste money on things you’ll never wear!
One last cautionary note, this season is going to be full of bright colours, so extra consideration of your own colouring will serve you well and prevent you from looking like a lolly pop.
