White Wardrobe: How To ‘Wow’ In White
White!
Whether you love it or loathe it, white is huge this fashion season!
Now contrary to my regular black ensembles, I absolutely love white and this season, the achromatic colour (for the physic experts out there) is showcasing its brightness beyond the classic white shirt.
We are seeing white pants, jeans, blazers, accessories and shoes bake in the colour’s crispness.
White dresses are no longer just for brides, everyone is being invited to work the angelic hue.
Many items are made to mix and match with your favourite colours while other white items are vying to be worn all at once.
Actually, this is my personal favourite look, to wear white-on-white. And no, it’s not that hard.
Now I know many of you are already having nightmarish visions of white’s impracticality or a look of unflattering tight white pants.
Stay with me…
White can be slimming (what?!), elegant, edgy and it also has the perfect partner – black – and always has.
It seems the creatives behind luxury label, Chanel knew it then and know it now.
“Women think of all colours except the absence of colour. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” Coco Chanel is quoted as saying.
And Chanel’s current head designer, Karl Lagerfeld honours a very similar opinion:
Black, like white, is the best color!
So now that we have the advice from one of the world’s largest fashion houses that white is the go-to, let’s see what we can find for you. (Didn’t mean for that to rhyme!)
Today, we’ve put together some white/tonal options plus some style advice from yours truly to help you find and create your own white wardrobe looks:
- If you love white but it washes you out, opt for a softer white tone, or more of a nude, cream hue. You can also wear it away from your face or break it up with colour. (See point 5).
- If white isn’t practical for your lifestyle (be it your job, around kids, outdoor etc.), save it for an event. Unfortunately white doesn’t work well with vegemite fingers.
- If white scares the beejeebers out of you on the lower half, opt for a heavier fabric that you can’t see through. Think denim, leather or a solid A-line skirt. Alternatively, try layering a lighter pant with a light long-line top! This is a very elegant and sometimes slimming look.
- White is gorgeous mixed with nude, warm biscuit tones, or soft pastels. Try this season’s pink gelato/ballerina colours.
- For a statement – wear white with a bold pattern or bold block colour.
E.g. Black/white; fuchsia/white; orange/white; cobalt/white; navy/white and of course classic polka dots or linear patterns.
- Wearing white on white can be slimming and elongating – especially when worn with a nude shoe!
- Play with textures and fabrics. Try a white/cream leather jacket, white jeans or lace top. This will help break up the look.
Oh – and have I mentioned what a beautiful colour it is for the festive season? Work it now while you have so many options.
Now, I hope you enjoy my finds today and that this blog might just encourage you to try something you like but may have been afraid to try ☺
I would love to know:
- Do you love white?
- Do you wear white on white?
- Are you afraid of white?

Hi Cindy. So pleased that white is in for the summer. I lovewhite and wear it every summer. I particularly like white on white. It makes me feel cooler. (Mind and over matter) . I especially love white linen. White is not hard to keep clean if you wash it by itself with a whitening laundry product. It can be dressed up or down with scarves and jewellery.

Agree Bronwen I just love the freshness of all white!! xo

I love wearing white, it is my favourite neutral mainly because I don’t suit black or cream! I’ve always had a white pair of pants and just recently bought a white waterfall linen jacket for the summer to pair with them and all my other clothes.

Hi Cindy, I absolutely love white but unfortunately my cellulite on my legs dosen’t. I’ve tried waxy jeans, jeans with holes in them, but still no prevail. I’m yet to find the perfect pair of skinny white jeans that don’t show everything!! What do you suggest to remedy the problem?? BTW- I find your blogs soooooo helpful and it makes me feel more confident in what I wear!! THANK YOU!!!!
Cindy Newstead says
Thanks soooo much Sarah!!! Sorry my response is late!!!! Well I would first say if you have cellulite…….Avoid a skinny white jean as this will just hug it! Try a looser cut like a slim straight or a straight cut and avoid too much stretch in the fabric. Happy jeans shopping!!! 🙂 🙂 xx

Hi Cindy, I can’t wear white jeans as they make my hips wider and legs heavier and shorter. I prefer a faded blue loose boyfriend jean which still offers that casual laid-back summer look I love. Happy to wear white higher though.
