2014 Beauty Trends

Welcome to part two of our trend series: Beauty and Make-Up

Whether you’re in a beauty rut or looking to explore new trends, colours or application, I’ve found five new make-up trends for you to try.

When it comes to make-up, just like your wardrobes, I encourage you to play: play with colours, products and apply and reapply to discover what suits you.

If you’re in a need of a helping hand, a visit to your local department store beauty counter can be make-up heaven or better yet, make an appointment with a make-up professional who can assist with colour matching and teach you how to perfect application for day or night looks.

As always, foundation is important – your skin, not the product. Make-up should only be used to enhance your own beauty so look after your own assets first with a good skin cleansing regime, healthy eating habits and staying hydrated.

Now, it’s onto 2014 and the five beauty trends that I believe will be most popular here in Australia and to demonstrate these I’m leaning on some lovely ladies from this years’ Golden Globes:

Lip Bang!

Tangerine, wine and berry lip colours in complementing hues will be one of the “it” colour trends for the season. This is ideal for these wanting to off set loud printed outfits and looks gorgeous on ladies with blonde or dark tresses.

The lips should be your strongest statement while keeping the rest of the face minimalist. Actress Lupita Nyong’o’s nailed her brilliant red lip color (and dress) at this years Golden Globes along with Jennifer Lawrence and regular red lip beauty, Taylor Swift.

Beauty Tip# Apply coconut oil in the evening to your lips to keep them soft and supple.

Naturally Beautiful

Raw is my word to express simple beauty – pared back with only a touch of concealer to create this “girl next door” look. If you still need a little touch up, consider some light foundation or a touch of nude gloss.

This look is perfectly suited for our Aussie beauties who like to keep their look simple. Naomi Watts who regularly sports a very minimal look even kept her “made-up” face at this year’s Golden Globes neutral and still shined.

Beauty Tip# A glass of warm water and lemon upon waking up can remove toxins from your body keeping your skin clear and radiant.

Nail It

2014 will be our boldest nail year yet since nails made a comeback two years ago. This year, crisp stripes, over-the-top nail art, strong metallic, pastels and whites will be explored with many fashion colours translating from runway to nail.

We will see a strong bold approach to nail design that will blend in with the trends throughout the year.

Consider your nails an accessory – a great (and affordable) way to try trends. Katy Perry regularly showcases bold and daring nails but for something sweet, look to Zooey Deschanel who tweeted her daisy manicure to the world yesterday.

Beauty Trend# Apply a clear coat of nail strengthen before your colour. Some bold nail colours can temporarily stain the nail so this provides a base coat plus vitamins for your nails.

Cat Eyes

The 1960’s defined the polished and defined “cat eye” which is making a structured come back. This look creates a bit more of an impact for those wanting to achieve a “mod-retro” look and is regularly sported by actress Mila Kunis.

This look can be moderated to work for extreme to the more demure tastes and Australian make-up artist, Rae Morris shows how everyone can master this look. Meow!

Beauty Tip# Liquid liner will give you the best result for this look, just keep a cotton on hand to clean errors and always check that both eyes look symmetrical upon finishing this look.

Into the Shadows

The eyes are all about making an impact. Eye shadows this year will come in whites and metallics – this being a feminine alternative to the dark and mysterious smokey eye that will always remain timeless.

These softer hues will add a more subtle definition to the eye, exuding modern elegance with ease.

Sandra Bullock and Amber Heard sported beautiful blended shadow at this years Golden Globes. While it offers less drama than dark eyes, there is something quite captivating about warm eye shadow.

Beauty Tip# Don’t forget to blend! When using multiple colours, no one should see where one colour starts and finishes, work them into each other using an eyeshadow brush (small flat brush).
