Six Hair Trends To Try in 2014

As a stylist, watching the red carpets of the world always inspires me to check into my own style research so I was happy to find many of my 2014 hair predictions showcased at this weeks Golden Globes.

Considering we are only are two weeks into the New Year, you may be considering reinventing your style and a great place to start is with your hair.

Changing your hairstyle creates an instant style statement and you’d be surprised how a specific cut or colour can enhance your face, complement your skin tone and in some cases help you appear younger.

While it’s great to look to our peers and favourite celebrities for inspiration, it’s important when making a hair change that you consider speaking to a hair professional.

While Sandra Bullock’s long lengths or Jennifer Lawrence’s pixie crop may look beautiful, a professional hairdresser will foremost ensure the look will suit you (considering your face shape) and can provide you with a style that is easy to maintain and works with your lifestyle.

It can be so disappointing to leave a hairdresser with a glamorous new hairstyle and not be able to create the same look at home, or worse, it takes you hours to do so.

So for a little inspiration and consideration, here are six hair trends Australians will ask of their hairdressers this year:

Sleek

This style is beautiful for long straight hair and sees all the hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail or left out loosely behind the shoulders. The focus is on the front of the hair, which should remain neat with flyaways kept at bay, and also works well with an extreme side part for something different. Kim Kardashian does this very well!!

This look is simple and easy to wear for the Australian climate and lifestyle. It also requires little effort but oozes a strong chic style!

Glamorous Seventies

We wanted Farah Fawcett’s “flip” hairstyle back in the 70’s and we want it again. While it’s rumoured Farah did her own hair and make up, the 21st century gave us the gift of hot rollers, curling tongs and GHD straighteners to perfect this look.

This is a style with big waves and side parts. It’s beautiful for girls with naturally wavy locks (or those who want to create them) and ideal for Australia’s relaxed beach lifestyle that love a natural look.

Full Sixties Fringes

Heidi Klum nailed this fridge at the Golden Globes. The full sixties fringe is not blunt but long and spliced offering a fresh and sexy take on fringes.

It’s also perfect for those wanting to break away from the old centre part and long and oval shaped faces will enjoy this fringe most.

Beehives

We’re certain the beehive will never lose it’s buzz as it’s been recreated over and over since the 60’s with singer Adele making it part of her regular runway look.

This is a beautiful style for women looking to create a simple sophisticated up-do – it even works for every day looks and special occasions. Amber Heard worked a gorgeous modern beehive at the latest Golden Globes that translates to this year’s fresh and tousled look, which can incorporate side-swept fringes, loose ends and ponytails.

This will be a hit with our baby boomers that would have revelled in this look during the 60’s.

Punk Rock Cuts

While 2013 was the year of the pixie cut; this year hair is getting a little more rebellious. We will see Australian women sporting short, layered styles that will add an edgy look to those who want an easy to wear, yet stylish look.

It perfectly complements military and graphic art style fashion trends and will give you a modern edge to the new year.

Écaille

Écaille is a French word that means tortoiseshell. This hot new trend will make an enormous entrance into Australia, as it’s a more natural take to the Balayage or Ombré hair trend of 2013.

Écaille translates to a softer, more natural two-toned look – perfect for those seeking a new look that creates effortless style. Just like the colours of tortoiseshell, golden highlights are teamed with shiny, darker, rich caramel tones and it will be heavily explored in the Autumn/Winter months. Jessica Alba carries this off effortlessly and it looks ever so natural!
