3 simple rules for Florals, Patterns & Prints
Every season has its dominant element and flower power has hit SS15 big time!
When these fashion elements pop up, many clients ask: “Cindy, who can wear florals, patterns and prints? How can I pull off that look?”
Personally I’m not a big fan of florals, but that is my own preference. I style many ladies who love when florals hit the stores and I certainly appreciate the look, just on other people. I believe anyone can enjoy these fashion trends if they choose to, with a few simple tips.
Keep in mind that florals and patterns are meant to stand out, regardless of whether they are featured in small or larger scale.
Rule number 1:
Understanding whatever pattern you choose will stand out, it’s best to avoid these on areas you want to downplay. If for instance you want to downplay a larger bust, a pattern across your top may not suit. Patterns that run throughout a garment are different, what I’m talking about here is a single or just a few flowers screaming hey, look at my…. (insert what you want people to pay less attention to).
Rule number 2:
Don’t force yourself into something if it isn’t you. All too often people decide to put themselves in the latest fashion or style just because and you can tell immediately who these people are. Fashion should flatter, should make you feel confident and strong and should be something you love. Forcing yourself to wear flowers when you hate flowers just because everyone else is wearing flowers will make you uncomfortable and awkward. (Read above how florals are not for me but I’m happy to dress others in them).
Rule number 3:
Pattern can be aging so be mindful of the style you are buying when trying it on. While you may be able to pull a classic black dress or sweater off the shelf and just know it will work, the same is not true of patterns. Try it on to see how it looks, make sure it is age-appropriate and that it flatters you. This might be the time to take along that brutally honest friend because really, none of us wants to look older than we are. 🙂
Here are some florals, patterns and prints I hope will inspire you to experiment, to look beyond your normal fashion zone, and to broaden your horizons. If you are still feeling conservative, or are like me and believe patterns and florals really aren’t for you, remember accessories. These can be a great way to update your wardrobe and add a little umph, so with some subtle touches, even an anti-floral person like me can get away with.
There is a saying that “change is as good as a holiday” but only when it makes you happy. Avoid purchases just to have them. Focusing spending on items you love and have to have, choose new trends that suit, and you too can go out in style and feel like every day is a celebration.

Brilliant advice as always! I don’t do florals for myself either, but dressed a lady today who looked unbelievable in a black and white floral from Jaqui e. I wish I had a photo.
