Swimwear Style: Find Your Perfect Fit
Tis the holiday season, not necessarily the Christmas part, but the warm weather, beach holiday kind of part.
Winter is long behind us and we’re temporarily abandoning the dark denim and woolens for a fresh summer wardrobe. It’s a time where we’ll reveal our legs in skirts, arms in singlets and for some us it’s time to bare all (well almost all) if we have the opportunity to be by the beach or the pool.
It can be extremely daunting for some of us to bare any skin at all particularly those of us not so body confident.
Firstly, there is no holy grail for swimsuit bodies despite what the runways tell you.
Everyone is worthy of a poolside or beachside look that serves them. I don’t want to hear about anyone declining pool party invitations or sending hubby to the beach alone with the kids.
Now before you think there’s no way I’m wearing a bikini, stay with me.
If you haven’t been swimwear shopping for a while, you may be pleasantly surprised by the options available to you. You can mix and match separates (including sizes), there are embellishments in all the right places and the fabric is not as skimpy as you might think.
So today is a little visual collection for your perusal. Based on all budgets for your swimming attire, I’ve hunted down some great cover ups, one-piece bathers, gorgeous tankini’s and bikini’s to get you all thinking.
So here are three quick tips before our journey begins:
- To save money on a cover up to wear over bathers why not raid your wardrobe for that colourful print shirt or dress you purchased on that Bali trip that you NEVER wear.
- When buying bathers, choose the bottom half to reflect the same style of underwear that suits you. (Exclude your g-string as inspiration).
- Do your bather shopping early in the morning if you can. Allocate ample time for your shop, don’t rush and take as many options into the change room if possible.
And now for some surgery free style tips to nip and tuck you all in the right places:
- If you are broader in the shoulders, opt for wider swimwear straps to complement you;
- If you are large in the bust, make sure you have a underwire in your top half of your swimsuit to lift your bust off your tummy;
- If your breasts are small and humble (thank you Shakira) ruffles and a high neck can give the illusion of a little bit more;
- Tummy issues? Panelling and ruching can help. Also try a thicker fabric as it will work wonders;
- A halter neck is great on a triangle body shape as this will visually broaden your shoulders to balance you out;
- Finally, learn from my mistake of buying a one piece in white without checking for thickness. I had the displeasure of having way too thin fabric meet transparency – NOT GOOD!! I since found and now own a lovely white one piece that’s not transparent after venturing in the water
Oh and if you feel like your butt is a bit Kim Kardashian (lucky you) avoid print on it! Bring the print up top!
Happy Bather Hunting, let me know what you find on your shopping expedition!
Has anyone done their bather shopping yet? If so what have you found?

That Target dress looks great! I’ve always been a fan of boy leg bathers (especially vintage inspired), but do they really work if you are short and shapely?

Hi Cindy I bought my bathers from sea folly a few years ago and they are still excellent,comfortable and well worth the money.
Merry Christmas too you and your family too. Xo
