Casual Looks for Family School Holidays
You may have already started school holidays, or for some they’re at the end! I remember how it feels like the end of a marathon, you have limped over the finish line with a relieved smile. The exhaustion of having a million things to do every day, your early morning routine, the seemingly never ending extra-curricular activities and appointments, the homework and school projects have you worn you down. The school uniforms are starting to look worse for wear and the lunchbox packing ideas are becoming less and less imaginative and you are ready for a break!
For me by the end of the school term, above all else I had an overwhelming need to reconnect with my boys, just take things at our own pace and enjoy my time with them. I have always felt incredibly blessed that my flexible work arrangements meant I could spend time at home with the children during the school holidays. I am in awe of the many parents who both work full time, and cope with managing school holidays and other school activities, and it brings me a lot of joy that personal styling provides the flexibility to allow for family time.
Although I looked forward to them, the winter holidays always created slight feelings of trepidation for me… how was I going to keep them entertained during the winter holidays when it is sometimes too cold and wet to enjoy the great outdoors? The cabin fever can be strong at home especially with four boys, things can escalate pretty quickly from happily sharing and games or Lego to World War III. So what do we do as the providers of entertainment? We put on our favourite winter woollies, our big jackets and fabulous boots and we brave the cold and make the most of our precious time!
Here are some classic looks for these school holidays, or perhaps your upcoming trips and weekends away during this cold time of year.
Snow Holiday
What could be more fun in winter than heading to the snow? Head off with some other families and share a lodge, explore the nearby alpine townships and take some fun family happy snaps in the snow.
The longline Puffer Jacket is the staple fashion accessory this winter, the sports luxe trend also extending to the puffer vest. Perfect for the snow. Check out Witchery, Seed and Country Road for some perfect options also.
We love these jelly wellingtons from Seed, a perfect waterproof option for daytime and excellent for a day in the park!
Picnic & Park Time
The family picnic is such a lovely day out, you can even take your loyal family pet for quality time with the kids. Rug up and let the kids expel all their energy on the play equipment instead of destroying the house!
The roll neck jumper perfect for the colder weather, of course this style is not suited for the strong inverted triangle body shape with a large bust, however most body shapes wear this look well. If you are an inverted triangle, we suggest a style with a lower neckline.
Day at the Movies
How much fun was going to the movies when you were young? We all have fond memories of our favourite film and the delight in being allowed to choose from the lolly bar and fill our faces with handfuls of popcorn. As it is an indoor activity it is nice to stay dry and being usually in a shopping centre or busy shopping strip, perfect place to flaunt our personal style usually hidden under all those layers. Check out our blog on layering that covers how to wear layers without adding bulk.
Beach Holiday
When you just can’t stand the cold, just escape! A holiday somewhere warm and wonderful where the cocktails flow, the kids are in kids club and it calls for maxi dresses and those gorgeous bathers you have had hidden away since January. Bali is a popular destination for the winter school holidays and the perfect place to showcase your style. Check out our blog for tips when it’s time to pack.
Fun Parks
Are you heading to Queensland or lucky enough to already live in the sunny state? Here is an outfit suggestion for surviving a day on your feet. Of course don’t forget the Zoo, Museums, and aquariums!
Camping
Love or hate camping, it is an activity that brings everyone together. Make the most of your time making sure you are comfortable and feel confident in your look. These looks are practical and stylish.
Coffee and play dates
Lean on other Mum’s while entertaining the kids. Head to the local family friendly café or if you are brave enough children’s play centres provide those hours of entertainment.
Mums Night Off
Who said the school holidays are only for the kids? Take the opportunity to make the most of the early morning lie-ins and head out with your girlfriends for a dinner and drinks. Saba have some elegant and fantastic looks perfect for a night out. Want to up the ante? Head to Cue for your edgier and sexier look.
What have you got planned these school holidays that you are really looking forward to and what will you be wearing?
