What To Wear This Mother’s Day
There’s something really special about Mother’s Day, when your children are all grown up and adults themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I have very fond memories of my little boys coming home from school, pleased as Punch and smiling from ear to ear as they handed me cards that they had carefully spent hours in craft time making. I can remember those cards as if it was only yesterday!
Stick figures painted on brightly coloured cards, usually with a sun, a flower and sometimes a house in the background! Blobs of paint for eyes, hair usually painted as spirals or straight lines and always, always, the biggest curve of a smile. And there was always something else painted in the picture that I could never figure out what it was and would always have to ask what it was! I’m sure many of you remember (or still have) your own children proudly presenting you with their hand-made Mother’s Day cards. In fact, I reckon if I looked hard enough, I’d be sure to find an old card stashed away in a box or two in the garage!
My four ‘little boys’ are all grown men now! And I love the relationship that we enjoy, each of them amazing young men with whom I can just spend hours and hours having a laugh with, and chatting to them about life, their dreams, my dreams, and more. They make me really proud and I’m looking forward to spending some time with them this Mother’s Day – they always make me feel really special and while I’m not quite sure what the plans are for the day as of yet, I have a few styling ideas already up my sleeve so I’m ready to look as good as they make me feel.
One of my favourite cafes to visit and enjoy a chai tea, eat some breakfast and soak up the atmosphere is Little by Little. It’s always a hive of activity and I love to start a weekend morning off here. I might start my Mother’s Day celebrations off here (with at least one of my boys) which will be a nice and relaxing way to kick start the day, so this Jeanswest outfit below would be ideal. It’s casual yet at the same time, on trend with this season’s leather focus and perfect for trans-seasonal layering. This look is perfect for a morning catch up and a casual lunch.
The boys might decide to invite me for lunch at O.MY!! As you might remember, most of them work in hospitality and as we all know, Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year in the trade! But, this is our day to enjoy being pampered! This outfit is perfect – gorgeous Country Road Knit Tie Front Dress hides a tummy, and teamed with fabulous boots, it can be dressed up or down with a scarf or statement necklace.
Another knit dress that I am really loving this season is the Sportscraft Mia Knit Dress in Black, perfect for most shapes, except for a triangle. This dress is easy to belt and layer with a sleeveless vest. I also love to layer jewellery and a scarf to take my look even further. These classic Joanne Mercer boots are just divine and add a level of sophisticated elegance to the look.
A really versatile piece this season for breakfast and lunches is this fantastic coat from Seed in one of the big colours of the season – grey. Fabulous for layering with long knits and with sleeves that can be rolled up or down it can take you from the chilly mornings through the rest of the day.
Another great coat for winter this season is this stylish Seed black jacket with faux-fur collar, perfect for when the weather turns and we head into the later Winter months. This jacket will be on high rotation this season as it can be dressed up or down depending on your choice of footwear .
While it has gone a little cooler and winter days are not as predictable as summer days (are the seasons ever predictable in Melbourne!), a family barbeque in the park or at home is a gorgeous way to celebrate the day. This fun and relaxed dress from Country Road can be layered with a long line black cardigan to keep the chilly afternoon breeze at bay. These over the knee boots have a low heel making them practical as well as stylish. This look transitions really easily into a relaxed smart-casual look for al fresco dining experience at your favourite local restaurant.
While I’m as happy celebrating Mother’s Day with a relaxed breakfast, cruisey brunch or day in the park, in case my boys decide we should go out somewhere fancy for dinner – obviously my favourite restaurant is O.MY – this is one of my favourite dresses from this season’s collection from Alannah Hill. There are many reasons to love this dress, it is gorgeous on most shapes, and excellent in hiding problem thighs. For an elegant evening look you can wear with heels and simple accessories or you could belt and wear with boots for a heavier look.
Another gorgeous dress from Alannah Hill is the She Loves Him Dress. This dress is feminine, playful and can be belted as shown to give it a dressier look. Most shapes will feel amazing in the style, especially the triangle as the sleeves add dimension to your top half and the pattern runs the entire way through the dress. Mother’s Day should be about looking as good as you feel especially on the day.
Wishing all the Mothers’ reading today’s blog a wonderful day and hope this has helped plan what to wear this Mother’s Day! Do you have anything special planned?
