Go Sleeveless: Five Ways To Wear a Vest

Oh, I do love Autumn. Autumn fashion that is.

It’s that wonderful in-between season that sees us all itching to wear the new looks flooding into stores.

So this season, we’re welcoming back the vest as one of the key looks for the months ahead. I think it’s this season’s most flexible fashion piece that can really work to elongate you while adding a layer of warmth.

It could even be the new blazer.

Now before you reach for your puffy outdoor vest or wonder if your denim vest from the 80’s will cut it – it’s not quite the same.

The 2015 vest is longer, more stylish and made from some of our favourite winter fabrics. Think wool with leather trimmings or crisp white viscose with contrast black buttons.

It’s also the ultimate layering tool for the season – you can drape it over almost anything.

Now while it is a trend, like all trends, they’re not for everyone. The vest in particular, is very height dependent so sadly not all of us will be able to wear the long-line version.

Yes, I am sad also. All “5” foot of me.

So in today’s blog post, I have bravely tried a few vests on however they absolutely swamped me. So instead, I’ve still sourced some vests for you to try. As always, let me start with some style guidelines:

Defining the Look

As we really start to hit the cooler months, tights, leggings and jeggings with long boots will change the look of the long vest. However, if you’d like to wear it now, layering it over a thin dress or trouser is also a great option.

Length Limits

To avoid looking like you’re in uniform, length is key and this seasons vest should reach your hips and beyond also known as the long-line length which I mentioned earlier.

This is why it could easily consume you if you’re petite. However, as usual, nothing a pair of high heels or boots can’t fix. Try it out.

Styles

While they’re all sleeveless, you’ll find elegant collared versions, double-breasted vests or even what’s known as a “duster vest” – a lightweight vest that is without buttons or accessories.

Considering this season also is opting for a soft army fashion trend, don’t be surprised if you find vests in green or khaki colours, and edgier styles such as the moto or leather vest.

My more feminine ladies can tap into the gelato toned colours, basic white or even look for this season’s flower pattern.

How to Wear Tips:

1. If the vest is bulky, wear it over a thin fabric;
2. If you are broad in the shoulders, opt for a lightweight vest;
3. If you are narrow in the shoulders, a broad cut of vest will be great for your shape and balance you out quite nicely;
4. If you are extremely petite, opt for a lightweight fabric. This should be fitted for your shape and worn with a long boot or high heel;
5. If you are rounded in the tummy with not a lot of waist, a structured vest will be a great addition to Autumn/Winter. Also, a balanced fabric – not too thin and not too heavy.
