Cocktail Anyone?

Just what I’d like right now – a cocktail.

All year round, many of us receive invitations to a cocktail party. And when you’re sipping on a Bellini or a Cosmopolitan, it’s always nice to look the part.

So today we tackle the frequent cocktail dress code question – what to wear?

Firstly, we need to establish that different environments call for a varying dress code.

You might opt for something more demure at your office cocktail event but bring out your party-self at a girlfriends cocktail party.

So today, I’ve scouted the stores to source as many options as possible but left the “cocktail destination” to you!

Generally for a cocktail event, many of us will reach for the safety of an LBD. Now I’m not knocking the LBD, it’s a classic and will work every time however, there are many more options available in colour, print and styles.

Of course, I have included a couple for the black diehards – including myself.

Now for a few other things to consider:

1. Cocktail dress does not only mean DRESS!
2. If you’re more comfortable in a two-piece ensemble – top and skirt or pants – go for it!
3. If you are opting for a trouser or a skirt, you can add to the formality with a dressier fabric and shoe to help raise the bar of your overall look. Think lace, silks or sheen fabric.
4. Jumpsuits (or the romper) are a new and very welcome inclusion to our social attire. They offer leg cover up but with a dress-inspired style.
   
5. I always speak about the power of the “wow accessory” which is a perfect addition to your cocktail dress code. An item such as a bold necklace can also create a talking point which is nice at an event where you may not know many people.
6. Consider a gorgeous clutch with detail or a monochromatic colour against a plain dress. This can break up your look and add interest to your outfit.
7. A bag with a strap is also a great idea so your hands are free to hold a drink (and a canapé) whilst greeting people.
8. A cocktail party is a chance to change your makeup from your regular daytime look. Try a smoky eye or a bolder lippy. If you have a steady hand, a winged eyeliner is on-trend and very sexy.
9. If you are a tummy bloater – particularly after alcohol or finger food – be sure to dress accordingly. Avoid tight clothing. (Save the bandage dress for another time)
10. Finally, be comfortable. You’ll probably be standing most of the evening so wear comfortable shoes and an outfit you’re not fiddling with – no dress tugging.
