2012 could be considered the year of the nail as a recent report found that $268 million dollars was spent on nail polish in the US alone last year – incredible right?
Well the trend is set to continue as colors translate from fashion runways and new nail technology make nail decoration effortlessly fun. So once your nails are beautifully manicured, here are our top feel-good nail trends to try:
1. The New French Manicure
Classic white French manicures will always be in style but if you aspire to be a little different, try a dark or silver foiled tip instead of traditional white. Like you would match your shoes or handbag, consider finding a nail colour represented somewhere else in your outfit for a modern finish.
2. Be Colour Brave
Emerald was announced as the 2013 Pantone Colour of the year so play with bold green hues to try this fun trend. Seasons will continue to direct colour with black and midnight blue dominating winter and bolder, brighter colours for the warmer weather. It’s forecasted that nail colours in 2013 will be linked back to our connection with nature and the environment so lush greens and brown and caramel shades will be popping up all over the runways – watch this space.
3. Minimalist
For a no-fuss, sophisticated nail look, go minimal. A winning look every time will see nudes, soft pinks and light pastels applied to keep your nails classic and suited to almost anything you wear. This is perfect for those who work in a professional environment, brides or those who simply adore timeless shades.
4. Nail Effects
Perfect for the time poor lady who loves to DIY but still achieve a professional finish, Sally Hansen Salon Effects are real nail polish strips designed to stick and go with no dry time. Magnetic nail polish is also trending and is designed to give you a 3D nail look. Polish is applied normally and while the nail is still wet, a magnet is placed on top (without touching the nail) to create a rippling two-tone pattern. It is a little fiddly to apply but worth the result.
5. Shellac/Gel Nails
This is certainly not a new trend but expectations of nail polish that goes the distance keep CND Shellac (the original gel nail) in business. Shellac is a mixture of nail enamel and gel cured under a UV lamp. Smudge, chip and fade proof with a a promise of 14+ days wear, there’s no wonder this salon service is dominating nail trends. It’s available in an abundance of shades and is super low-maintenance – brilliant.
