Do Accessories Confuse You?
Do you look at women and think – wow, how did she do that?
If only I had a dollar for every time a client said, “I can’t accessorise, I have them but I don’t wear them!”
Accessories are a mystical myth to many, so I thought I would write this blog to hopefully clear your mind a little!
Now, this is my thinking about accessories, so please let me know if you agree or not.
If you’re not an accessories person, and you feel comfortable not wearing any, then relax – it does not matter.
On the other hand, if you don’t wear accessories but love the idea, then the simple answer is – wear them!
But how, you ask? Well, it really is just a simple game of dress ups!
Have your accessories accessible, not hidden in a bottom drawer of your closet. You want to see what you have to work with when you’re getting dressed.
If you are wearing a plain top with, say, a low scoop neck, try putting different necklaces on and see how you feel. You could wear almost anything with this, the key is finding what works for you.
Generally, if you are flatter in the chest you can afford more bulk in your necklaces – more of a statement.
If you are larger in the bust, it does not mean you can only wear small, insignificant pieces, but you do need to be more careful with the bolder, more statement pieces. Too bulky could add bulk where it’s not wanted, and too long could annoy you as it tends to move around on your chest as you walk.
Flatter Chest? Longer layers are great.
Accessories are like a condiment, you add to your meal slowly, trying it out until you have the perfect amount.
I find accessories can be very emotion based. Like when we are feeling happy and vibrant we tend to go a bit louder with what we wear, whereas when we are more pensive, or if we simply want to go under the radar, we might not feel like wearing anything at all.
I, myself, find my accessory wearing is mood based. For those of you who know me, I am a little frame, and I absolutely loathe delicate jewellery. For me it’s all about my mood or adding something to bring my outfit to life.
Don’t be afraid to mix your metals, give it a go and see how they sit on you, it’s a great way to make a statement!
Now, for my finishing advice – accessories need to come out and play. Try them, see how they feel, put them on with an outfit, breathe and walk out the door. Worst case scenario – TAKE IT OFF!!
Please!! Any Feedback, comment below as that way we can all chat together. I get sooo many emails after my blogs which is great – but if you can do it below we can all converse together!
So, enjoy your accessory shopping, buy only what you absolutely love, and wear it!!

Thank you Cindy. Wonderful topic.
Over the years I have gathered many bits and pieces but didn’t wear any of it much. That is, until I did some work with you. I bought a “tree” and have beads, chains and bangles easy to see and find. Now I can honestly say that I feel a bit undressed leaving the house if I haven’t accessorised.
Thank you for reminding me to go and play dress ups again.
You are absolutely right Cindy, a lot of my jewellery is tucked away in a drawer and I hardly touch it. Out of sight, out of mind. I am now going through it and leaving it out. I find that when I do wear a necklace or bangle, people always comment on it! Also I find by experimenting with different pieces you generally ‘know’ which one looks the best. Loving the blogs Cindy x
Thanks Anita! A blog a week is the aim!! Yes, We Woman can sometimes expect jewellery to jump out and accessories our outfits all by themselves, however if only it was that simple! Playing dress ups is the key to clothing success! xx
Hi Helen, I am glad you have a tree growing in your bedroom also! I only got mine on Monday as I have looked around for something I actually like for a long time. This fits just enough of my faves at the moment and as I like, I can replace with my new faves!! Dress ups is a must!!!!!
I must admit I have a lot of accessories, recently I bought a jewellery full length mirror and had a massive clean out of accessories and only kept the ones I wear. I now wear them all especially now in summer!!!!
Thats so great to hear Toula! I don’t care where I buy from as long as I love it and wear it! xx
Hi Cindy,
What are your thoughts on wearing necklaces and belts at the same time? I always feel if I wear a longer necklace with a wide belt that the two are fighting with each other and it needs to be one or the other. Maybe if the belt is wide, it’s best to only wear a subtle necklace and not a statement piece. What do you think?
Hi Kate. great question. but you have probably answered it already. If you feel like its too much…..it is! I always say, put it all on and then strip it back.
