The Pursuit Of The Perfect Winter Boot
As temperatures drop, many of you will have already embarked on your Winter boots hunt.
With only a fortnight until Winter officially arrives, the hottest question I’m being asked at the moment is: What kind of boots can I wear for my height?
AW14 is a huge year for boots. So while considering a boot style be it this season’s equestrian, gladiator, moto, combat or classic boot you also need to consider the fit for your body shape.
A boot shouldn’t restrict your calves, nor should it shorten you or be uncomfortable to walk in – whether it’s heeled or not.
So without a tape measure and without seeing your lovely bodies, I’ve created a how-to guide for picking the perfect pair of Winter boots.
The Long and The Short Of It
- For those of you with lengthy pins, an ankle boot or long boot can come up high on your leg and calf.
- If you’re evenly balanced in your vertical proportions then a knee-high boot will elongate while an ankle boot that finishes around the ankle is preferable.
- For those of you with shorter legs, consider heeled ankle boots your winter shoe friend and a fitted, slim line knee high boot. A longer toe on your boots will also help elongate you.
- Long boots over the knee is only for the taller ladies and those with longer legs. If this is not you, you may end up looking like Puss In Boots – and not the cute Shrek type.
Classic Comfort
- With an abundance of trends at your disposal (leather, suede, fur accents, gladiator) it can be difficult to remember that comfort is key when buying Winter boots. Don’t let them look amazing in your wardrobe without any wear time and if they hurt they are not a good buy.
- A platform boot will offer the most comfort, support and help raise you up an inch or so.
- If possible, keep your boots simple if you are looking to wear them through a few seasons.
Heel Height
- Flat or low heeled boot with a shorter skirt and higher heel boot for a longer skirt length. Simple.
Calf Concerns
- For ladies with wider calves (you are definitely not a rarity), try Nine West at Chadstone who can stretch them for you. Betts boots and City Chic can also help.
- Skinny calved ladies can try Stuart Weitzman for a fitted boot with leather and elastic. Also look for rouching or detail in the boot to add width (only if you have longer legs).
- Avoid rouching and buckles if you have thick calves as this will only add bulk
Now it’s over to the store recommendations to source your fabulous Winter Boots:
- Aldo
- David Jones
- Edward Meller
- Jo Mercer
- Merchant
- Myer
- Nine West
- Stuart Weitzman
- Wittner
- Zu
So off you go ladies, happy boot hunting and best of luck finding an ankle wonder, a lengthy knee high or a mid calf marvel.
Have you already found your Winter wonder boot? If so, what did you buy and where from?

Hi Cindy – as I transition into retirement I’ll be living kinda suburbs to rural (rather than city) and colder for some of the year, I’m thinking some nearly flat boots that look feminine would be my ideal – probably would be in pants & am blonde so can do & love the Taupe colour, seen any? Favorite colour navy for clothes.
thanks
Lynne
Hi Lynne, I know Jo Mercer has some Taupe in a lower heel as does a few in Myer I’ve seen ( Not sure who by…….just seen them! ). We have lost Santini at Chadstone however they will have some in the City as will Mollini! Hope this helps xo
