Winter Arm Candy: Finding Your New Winter Handbag
From time to time, I’ll pick a blog topic that isn’t for everyone.
So for those of you who have nailed hangbag shopping (well done), enjoy the pretty pictures and for the rest of you – the hunt is on!
While many of us find handbags an easy accessory to buy, it can be a challenge for some. Even I personally can take months to make a decision on the perfect bag – yes, I am very fussy!
My hesitation usually lies in that fact that I covet styles that don’t particuarly suit me. For example, I would love to buy a large, soft leather tote however here are the drawbacks: I am petite in size and height so a large bag will overwhelm me
- I am petite in size and height so a large bag will overwhelm me
- In my line of work, I am always on my feet and moving about so a large bag would just be too heavy to carry on my shoulders all day long.
So let’s begin with some body shape and height style rules:
If you are small, find a bag that will complement your frame. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a tiny clutch, but even a medium size bag minus long overwhelming straps or dangling accessories.
If you are taller (lucky you) you can wear a larger bag/tote and carry it to your heart’s content!
For those with a tummy, avoid bags with straps that cross over your mid-section, they will only draw attention to this area.
If you have a larger frame, avoid small and tiny bags. Instead opt for a medium bag otherwise you little bag will look completely out of proportion.
In terms of the type of handbag, arm candy should be practical for it’s use yet stylish to align with the rest of your outfit. If you use the bag for work, it may need to be in a more classic colour, be structured and large enough to house your personal items plus an iPad or notes. A weekend handbag should be lighter and match your every day wardrobe while an evening handbag is only required to be big enough to house your purse, phone and some touch-up make up if required.
Handbags can range vastly in prices from your Target tote all the way to your thousand dollar Burberry bag. However stores including Mimco, Sportscraft and David Lawrence offer mid-range bags which still offer quality and longevity.
If you are over 40, I would always suggest investing in a quality handbag (think long life leather and suede) unless you can find a cheaper alternative that still looks the part.
Soft leathers and soft fabrics are great for a slouchy day look but a more structured bag is great for work or for the evening. Embellishments on handbags will bring the evening out in a bag and don’t forget animal print, as they continue to trend season after season.
If you’re looking for a colourful bag, this is a great way to add to a classic outfit and explore trends.
So I hope you have enjoyed the guidance around how to choose your new your winter bag and there is perhaps something for everyone. 🙂
